The Japanese word ‘mutsubu’ (to live harmoniously) is said to be the origin of Mutsuki, in that the New Year was a special time when people gathered together to . It strongly reflects the custom of families and relatives gathering during the New Year period to celebrate and foster warm, close relationships. Although this term has not been used since the Meiji period when Japan opened the country to the West, we think it still has its place in the modern day. The coldest, and also shortest, month of the year not only is a transitional period into Spring, but a month where care must be taken to properly prepare for the coming year. The ‘kisara’ kanji is fairly literal in this one! The reasoning lies behind the need to look after your body and still wear many layers of clothing so as not to be blindsided by the chilly temperatures in the enthusiasm for the forthcoming promise of warmer temperatures. Whilst cherry blossom season is the seasonal signifier that most people are aware of, the budding sprouts of the willow trees coming back to life after a dormant winter is the real indicator that spring is on its way! This word serves as an important reminder to begin to enjoy your surroundings and embrace the developing joy and hope that the unveiling year will bring. Whilst the most direct translation of it is as stated above, with reference to the 卯の花 (‘Uu-no-hana’) flowers that bloom from the trees signifying the beginning of what we now know as ‘Cherry Blossom Season’ in Japan, there have also been other interpretations of it. Apparently, the true origins of the name have been lost to time, but my favourite one is ‘生まれる’ (‘Umareru‘), meaning ‘to come to life‘. The combination of floral imagery and the promise of new life certainly conjures up images of spring lambs and fluttering cherry blossom petals in the wind, doesn’t it? For those of us ‘blessed’ with hayfever and seasonal allergies, however, it also reminds us to keep well stocked up on eyedrops and tissues! Traditionally, in Japan, Spring is the month of new beginnings. It certainly fills us with promise as we see the sun rising earlier and the skies getting bluer. The ‘sa’ character in this month can be read in a few different ways, but generally speaking it signifies the preparation of the fields for planting rice for the upcoming season. The fresh, newly sprouted green of the fields, nourished by the rainy days of April, brings us a bit of happiness as we head into summer. It also relates to planting tea leaves- a busy month for farmers! We can interpret this tradition of sowing seeds as a means of working towards the rest of the year with a renewed enthusiasm as we shake off the clouds of winter and early spring under the bright sunshine of May. Not too hot, and not too cold (hopefully…!), May really is the ideal season to start both little projects and grand designs as the year to come starts to reveal itself. Quite conversely, in Japan, June signals the start of the months long rainy season (梅雨, or ‘Tsuyu’) that proves crucial to the growth of crops that nourish us for the rest of the year. As you are sure to be aware, rice is a very valuable crop in Japan, with over 90% of the population consuming the grain for at least one meal per day. So, despite the rain perhaps being oppressive and constant during the day, it is something to be valued, given its important contribution to the flat farmlands that lie in wait throughout the Japanese countryside. Of course, there is a silver lining to every grey cloud that will soon cover the skies of Japan. Just as early spring brings forth the heady arrival of sakura blossoms, June sees the rebirth of the hydrangea bushes that are often planted in the grounds of shrines and temples throughout the country. The dense, warm raindrops cascading like jewels off of the muted pink and purple petals of this bursting bloom can be quite spectacular, and a real respite when viewed against the heavy storm clouds of the rainy season. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/660cfc1a66bd4772e278ae41/f210c676-4d3b-433c-a848-3e3b282c7e97/c649bd18-430d-80ff-5100-67437c2bf51a.jpg YSD STUDIO - Months in Repose: interpreting the Japanese ‘kyureki‘ year Fumizuki is a really fascinating alternative name to explore. Whilst the kanji 文 historically means ‘book’, it symbolises the practice of betterment through erudition and knowledge, most likely stemming from a tradition held during Tanabata festivals. In these ceremonies, people would open their books and expose them to the night sky, hoping to enhance writing skill and knowledge. It also served a more practical purpose- July in Japan is one of the wettest months, and airing out your books would dispel the growth of mold and dust on your all important tomes. Now conversely to the above, others argue that the name stems from another reading of the kanji- ‘Hofumizuki’ is another way of interpretation, and refers to the month being crucial to the growth of rice- in a way changing the meaning from intellectual to agricultural betterment. Historically, Tanabata ceremonies included a prayer of protection of rice crops from storms to ensure for good harvest later in Autumn; it makes sense that this would also be symbolically reflected in the month’s name. Fascinating stuff! In modern day Japan, Tanabata is a festival celebrated on the 7th of July. People will visit shrines and write their wishes on slips of paper and tie them to bundles of bamboo grass. These bundles are then burned in order to send wishes to the gods. It also celebrates the story of star crossed lovers Orihime and Hikoboshi, who cross the milky way to reunite once a year on this date. However, as we find ourselves stepping over more fallen branches and avoiding puddles on the way home during an ever earlier encroaching dusk, we may also think of summer winding down and making way for the latter half of the year. It is said to be the time when the first leaves begin to drift from the trees, as if they are testing the waters as to whether or not to begin their own journey into Autumn. This transitional period highlights the beauty of the in-between. Obon (お盆) is an annual Buddhist event for commemorating one's ancestors, whose spirits are believed to temporarily return to this world in order to visit their relatives. In celebration of those who have passed, dances (bon odori) are performed at summer festivals as a way for the spirits who are visiting to celebrate with loved ones, and food offerings are made at house altars to satiate them before their journey back. Reflective of this, we hope that your August is not only filled with the anticipation of the beautiful orange and golden spiced Autumn foliage, but with fond memories of a joyful summer spent with loved ones, new and old. In Japan, it’s a time to feel the tranquility and calm that night can bring after a hectic day. In the past, it was often reflected by admiring the sound of insects in the air and the beauty of the moon at dusk. Reading was also a popular activity in the autumn, reflected in the interesting concept of 読書の秋 (Dokushou-no-aki, literally ‘the autumn of reading’) that has been gaining popularity in more recent times. As it goes, the autumnal months have been proven to provide the ideal environment for people to focus on reading and self betterment, with the humidity lowering and temperatures settling to a more tolerable level- perfect for concentration and comfort. For many of us, the thought of summer ending can fill us with dread- gone will be the evenings relaxing in the sunny pub gardens after work, and to come will be umbrellas blown inside out as we try to escape the sudden downpour of rain on our commute home! But it isn’t all doom and gloom- the chill starting to settle in after hours can also mean bringing our favourite coats and boots out of storage and spending cosy evenings in with loved ones, or perhaps doing as the Japanese do and catching up on your reading list. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/660cfc1a66bd4772e278ae41/47c02917-6607-4d1a-8906-6eec22a77ace/890556e3-a972-62f4-32d3-4771403ccb4f.jpg YSD STUDIO - Months in Repose: interpreting the Japanese ‘kyureki‘ year - ‘The month without gods’ may sound quite negative at first glance! However, the reasoning behind the name is quite a complex one. In Japanese folklore, the gods congregate once a year to discuss human life and what they can do to help us prosper in the upcoming year. Because of this big event, the gods depart their homes all over Japan and gather in Izumo prefecture- so naturally, this leads to the month being without their presence in various places around the country. However, in quite a contrary manner, the region of Izumo calls this month ‘Kamiarizuki’; the month WITH gods! Izumo is known as the place where the chief gods of Japan reside. They oversee not only the prosperity of humans and their relationships, but the wellbeing of the years harvest. Around Japan, celebratory ‘omatsuri’ (festivals) are held to convey respect and thanks to the gods and nature for providing us with sustenance for the years both past and upcoming. The all important rice harvest also takes place during this time; and with delicious autumnal offerings like chestnuts, apples, persimmons and mushrooms alongside this staple grain, there is certainly no shortage of food to give thanks for! October also brings with it the beauty of the seasonal shift- in Japan, much like the sweeping of cherry blossoms from one end of Japan to the other, the bright burnished red leaves of autumn can be experienced flowing from one end of Japan to the other. Known as ‘momiji-gari’ (leaf hunting), it’s similar to the ‘hana-mi’ (flower viewing) of spring. Momiji is the name for the maple leaf synonymous with Japan’s aesthetic heritage- as they flutter to the ground under a crisp and clear sky, we can certainly feel that the spirit of the season is upon us. Similarly, as we tread more familiar ground in the UK and elsewhere, the beauty of autumn’s foliage can be admired as we head into the latter half of the year. Although the trees may grow bare, and brisk chilly mornings become the norm, we can’t help but feel charmed by the subtle energy that October holds innate within itself. However, this month can also be seen as one that highlights the beauty of the seasonal shift in more ways than one. November (now known as ‘Juuichigatsu‘) seems to be more of an anticipatory month, slightly lost to the excitement of December joys, and yet still very important in terms of the year shifting into its conclusion. Many Japanese people take this time to enjoy the final beauty of the falling leaves as the branches begin to become bare, with momijigari (leaf viewing) in full swing as the reddening leaves end their sweep across the country. In the tea ceremony world, the summer furo (a more modest portable water heating pot) is carefully stored away and the true ro (a charcoal lit hearth situated within the tatami room itself) is utilised to warm both guests and servers alike during service. Some of you may remember from a previous newsletter where we said that the autumnal months provided the ideal environment for cultural enrichment activities; take for example Bunka no Hi (Culture Day), which honors the arts, academic endeavours and sciences, with many schools and clubs around the country holding events, and special art exhibitions opening for the week. It also lends a great setting for outdoor activities as the rain and oppressive heat give way to cooler (and drier!) days. Here in Britain, the clocks have gone back 1 hour, and with them we have lost a precious hour of daylight. But it’s not all doom and gloom! With Guy Fawkes’ night leaving in its wake a heady scent of bonfire, and the beautiful red and gold leaves creating a sort of imperfect picnic blanket sprawled across our paths, we hope you will take a moment to take in the beauty of your environment (perhaps in the company of a certain spiced gourd flavoured latte…) and enjoy the last vestiges of Autumn as we veer ever nearer to December’s frosty beckoning. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/660cfc1a66bd4772e278ae41/b77c1e40-64a3-4ef3-b133-125ba0d36c2b/09103245-cb93-2799-20bd-8a07e5e06546.jpg YSD STUDIO - Months in Repose: interpreting the Japanese ‘kyureki‘ year - In a bit of a change from the ‘Tsuki’ kanji of the other months, ‘Shiwasu’ stands out in and of itself not just because of the unique suffix, but also because of the specificity of its meaning. In Japan, Buddhism and Shinto are the predominant religions, and Buddhist monks in particular are referenced in Shiwasu. It comes from them being so busy with preparations that they break their normally calm and methodical demeanour and must rush from event to event performing all important rituals and ceremonies- hence, the month of running monks! December and early January are very important months in Japan, reserved not only for shrine visits and sorting out any loose ends but also for ‘susuharai‘, the mid-month deep clean of households, as well as preparing to return home to see family. Unlike in many western regions, Christmas is not commonly a celebrated occasion in Japan- in fact, Yukari and I often say that things are reversed, as Christmas is casually celebrated with friend groups and partners, and New Years is reserved for visiting your family. The meals are also much more casual at Christmas- believe it or not, strawberry cream cake and fried chicken (specifically the kind made by a famous colonel from Kentucky) are a common delicacy during Japanese Christmas! Conversely, New Years Day sees households spending days beforehand preparing a meticulously hand crafted ‘Osechi Ryori’* meal served in tiered lacquerware boxes, eaten layer by layer throughout the day, with a formal shrine or temple visit with family being customary to ring in the new year, too. This imposing building is Fukuyama Castle, where we spent a lovely evening at the end of March. A ‘reunion’ for ALCOVE, consisting of many friends from all over Japan, came to its fruition in our hanami (cherry blossom viewing) party situated in the bath house of the castle grounds. With food provided by a local bento box company, we sat and admired the newly sprouting flowers in a balmy evening spent drinking and relaxing in good company. It was certainly an experience to remember- how many of us can say we had a dinner party in a castle! To unwind after a hectic few days, we went to visit Yukari’s friend in Mishima, a beautiful city in the Shizuoka prefecture. It’s a quick ride on the bullet train from Tokyo, and definitely worth the stop! We spent a wonderful two days in her company, accompanied by two very sweet Shiba dogs, and she kindly drove us around the beautiful countryside and showed us how beautiful Mishima is, in all its springtime greenery. She even took us to a restaurant with my name (‘Kimika’, as seen on the left, ‘きみか’), where we ate a very delicious meal together. Because of this, we thought it would be more meaningful if they were available to buy in our studio space instead! Often piled to the brim with fabric, tools, wallpaper samples, inks and, in my case, paperwork that hasn’t been done (oops), our studio is somewhere that we often had to hastily tidy up if someone wanted to come for an appointment or to take a look at what we had to offer. I wanted to try and contain as much space as possible whilst prioritising our favourite things to do- making a calm and meaningful environment for people to be able to freely see what we had to offer. I also quite like to draw diagrams. I was in my happy place. A very dusty day was spent moving things around and setting up the IKEA Kallax room divider. I was certainly in my element as I was allowed to use a hammer AND an electric screwdriver. It’s the little things in life, isn’t it? A thing that Yukari had told me about a while ago that I also agreed would be fab was a pegboard area where we could hang and display various products for people to look at- not only was it practical, it would also look great and save us some table space. With the help of our rather battered and bruised wrapping table and a pretty deadstock linen teatowel from a recent trip to Atelier Hop in Amsterdam by yours truly, we were able to create the perfect centrepiece to our room. Throughout the month of December, as our friends and beloved clients came to visit us, the ceramics quickly sold and became a firm favourite amongst those who now own them. A lasting connection One thing that we really loved was that because everybody was able to come in as and when they were able to, we got to spend a lot of time with each individual who came in and help them choose the perfect gift. Some mentioned that it would now be their go-to stop for for special occasions like birthdays or housewarmings! The nostalgia laden quote above is from a novel by renowned novelist Fumiko Hayashi, who was raised in Onomichi and eventually found acclaimed fame due to her poems and novels. A statue was erected in her honour just outside of the shotengai (shopping arcade) to honour her contributions to the city’s heritage. Her most well known work, ‘Horoki’ or The Diary of a Vagabond, is a semi-autobiographical novel that recounts her lifetime spent as a nomad all over the world, and other work by her like ‘Furui Kaze, Atarashii Kaze’, also closely references the area in a transitory, almost dreamlike fashion as she recounts lifetimes past, present and future. Yukari wanted to have a new specialised fan for her tea ceremony gatherings. Ayami san is a calligrapher, in Japan called 'shoka'. Yukari asked her to put a passage from her favorite book, 'Horoki'. The blue is from the colour of Onomichi's sea. The segment of the writing here says, 'Umi ga mieta/ Umi ga mieru/ Gonenburi ni miru Onomichi no umi wa natsukashi'. It's a little hard to find a transcription of this, but very roughly translated, it says 'I saw the sea/ I can see the sea/ This nostalgic sea that I last saw five years ago'. The word sea ('umi') appears three times in the passage. Set in 1953 postwar Japan, the film centers around the everyday lives of two elders and their children who have all grown up and lead seperate lives. Onomichi's railways, charming homes and dockyards feature heavily in this gentle and everyday story by the famous director. In fact, a friend of mine from America, upon his first visit to Onomichi, stopped suddenly as we walked towards the concrete walls lining the city shore and said ‘Wait, of course! THIS is Ozu!’ as he realised where we stood was almost a shot-for-shot recreation of this famous film. When the first film of the ‘Onomichi Trilogy’ was being recorded in the 1980s, the residents were very excited as they imagined a romantic and glitzy view of their hometown, but instead Ohbayashi focussed on the things that he felt were charming- cracked roof tiles, disused buildings and the slight dilapidation of the city. Now we would call it nostalgic and lovely, but back then the residents called on him en-masse to hide such things as it wasn't glamorous at all! Ohbayashi really loves Onomichi and was central in the fight against its modernisation, as he didn't want to see it sanitised like so many other towns in Japan. A new independent film, 'Takano Tofuten no Haru', follows the story of a family run tofu shop in Onomichi City. The heartwarming tale of a father and daughter who live in the town, and those friends who surround them, are framed by the beautiful sights of the Setouchi sea and sky- director Mihara Mitsuhiro chose Onomichi as the location almost as an homage, in part, to Ozu's famous film 'Tokyo Story'. It is so wonderful to see that Onomichi continues to inspire so many stories of family and caring for loved ones. It’s certainly a city with much to give. The story centers around many LGBTQIA+ characters and their interconnecting lives, where they work on renovating old and abandoned houses into community projects. Themes like mental health, familial relationships and gender identity resonate throughout, with the serene backdrop of Onomichi providing respite and comfort for those who live there. As their lives intertwine, they begin to free themselves from the stereotypes and negativity that others have put upon them just for being different, and are slowly able to unpack just how much such aspersions may have effected the way they view themselves and others. Upon my first reading of the book in 2019, I didn’t even register that the story took place almost entirely on the stone steps that run parallel to our house! A recent reread opened my eyes to just how much took place near us- in fact, the little underpass that connects our home to the main streets of the city features, as does the actual logi that our house is on! In Shimanami Tasogare, there are little sketches with fun information about Onomichi by the author and artist, Kamatani Yuhki. They have included places like Senkoji and the famous 'cat alley', amongst many other familiar sights like the winding stone steps and sweeping bridges that span over the inland sea. There’s also a pivotal scene that takes place halfway through the Shimanami Kaido cycle trail. Also featured heavily are Onomichi food staples such as ramen, okonomiyaki and hassaku citrus soft serve ice cream. It is certainly a manga that requires a full stomach to read, as the illustrations are so beautiful that you feel hungry just looking at the food! The 6th installment of the game takes place partly within Onomichi, and we find the central character Kiryu Kazuma having to go undercover as local regional mascot 'Ono Michio', a hassaku orange with a bowl of Onomichi Ramen on his head, to solve a high-stakes mission to find a missing person. A town known for its artisans and craftspeople with a deeply rooted sense of cultural heritage, a friend by the name of I-san took us there to enjoy the sights and sounds of this unique place. Fast forward to the next year, and we were firmly planted in the heart of Onomichi at Hotel Cycle, a building dedicated solely to the joys of cycling. Sat with us at a breakfast of locally sourced produce were Y-san and his friends, meticulously laying out the map for a very special cycling tour of the neighbouring Setouchi Islands. A place with strong connection to its roots, whilst allowing room for change and growth and supporting artists- what more could we ask for? Upon first look, renovating the house was a huge project. But, the location and house itself had huge potential, and after some inspection by the genius builder-slash-fisherman F-san we realised that it may just be the perfect place. Onomichi is known for its mountainous stone steps and winding alleyways, called ‘logi’, and our little house, at the crossroads of the shotengai, was the perfect location for us- not too many steps, a pretty view of the inland sea, and right at the doorstep of the shotengai. What more could we ask for? We invited them in for a closer look and they said that they could never have imagined such a beautiful and modern home walking down the traditional logi, and that truly made us swell with pride at how hard the team had worked on creating ALCOVE. It’s these chance encounters with the residents of Onomichi that cemented our love for the town. And they can also lead to amazing new relationships and enterprise, too! One day, whilst sitting by the lapping deck of Hotel Cycle with our friend J-san during a break in our cycling trip, we met a pair of friends who happened to be passing by and started up a conversation, thanks to their very cute little dog and wealth of freshly picked citrus fruit to share. Well, it turned out that one of the pair was actually a professional showroom organiser, and she was so intrigued by our story that we stayed in touch. Our story began with them in 2011, where they took over distribution of our wallpaper nationwide in Japan. Topics like inspiration, music, style, storytelling and more were the theme for this workshop and talk event. Our wallpaper designs were displayed around their beautiful building, where attendees could talk with Yukari and a Q&A panel allowed curious questions to be asked and answered. A makers workshop was also held, where under the expert guide of WALPA’s talented staff, attendees were able to make a series of objet for the home using Yukari’s wallcoverings, stickers and paints. We are very proud of our work with WALPA, and our latest collection with them, in their ‘Hattan!’ range, was really very fun to work on. Alongside other British designers, we were featured in their seasonal magazine WALLPAPER WORLD where we went into depth about our connection with Britain as Japanese designers. The lovely folks over at SWEENEY Tokyo, a hair salon in (you guessed it) Tokyo, first worked with us by using several of our designs like Wish You Were Here in London and London Paris New York. We also designed the salon’s logo! Well, we have known Kei for a very long time as he worked at our family salon, SWEENEY HAIRDRESSING, in London for a number of years, and remains a great friend even to this day. Kei developed a great affinity for London and brought that with him when he moved back to Japan at the end of his residency. His talents for hair styling extended to a knack for the English language too, and he now offers appointments in English as well as Japanese! Kei also shares Yukari’s love of fashion and design, with his favourite British designers being Paul Smith and Vivienne Westwood. This fun, punk sensibility paired with his attention to detail led to him also working on projects with us here at YSD London! Not only did his skills on the sewing machine help us, but his practical can-do attitude also was a huge boon to us during our times as an emerging design studio showing at design fairs all across the UK. His eye for design now lends itself not just to hairdressing but to hat making, too. The clever use of partitioning and steps with a fresh white trim added a sense of openness to the one-room style of the barber shop. Some of you may be wondering why we opted for wallpaper that wasn’t ours- you’d expect that from a design studio that creates wallcoverings, after all! Well, we chose the Morris ‘Strawberry Thief’ wallpaper to emphasise the traditional British design element of the shop, to create a sense of balance to the dark wood, and to allow the framed artwork and curiosities space to breathe. It also allowed Kei to choose a companion design, in the form of our hypnotic Country Mile, to be used in the bathroom withot clashing too much with what was already on display in the main space! Waiting clients can enjoy a relaxing drink whilst people watching, Hipster’s Paradise style, through the large window framing the bustling streets of Nihonbashi, lit by the romantic evening glow of the streetlights outside. Other incorporated stencils included a back-to-front quote that was cleverly placed behind the cutting mirror, something that is only revealed when sat in the chair itself! This project was a real labour of love from both parties, and we can’t wait to see what the SWEENEY TOKYO franchise cooks up next- we hope we’ll be involved, too! Yes, when you think denim, you usually imagine clothing- but its elegant draping properties and masculine feel also lends itself to home decor, too. Our mainline design, ‘Setouchi 1-3-4‘, is a love letter to the island of Setoda itself. We have always been fascinated with travel and what reaches us at the destination, and in this particular design we highlighted that with a full set of (accuracy advisable) instructions on how to reach Setouchi island, all the way from Greenwich! The design element in this curtains is a cool marine border theme, that from a distance seems like a simple printed set of stripes, but up close reveals itself as a storybook rendition of a journey from A to Z! We fell in love when we saw the industrial, almost rustic, feel of these curtains, and we love the details like the stitching and the textured screen print. And what’s in a name? It’s always an interesting task, when collaborating, to create a product that not only satisfies the client and their target audience, but also stays in the realm of your own design principals and style. When given the opportunity to make a new design to be sold alongside two of our existing designs, we thought immediately of the beauty in Setouchi’s natural greenery, including the myriad citrus trees that line the mountains and verges of the abundant islands. We added a few exclusive hidden references to Setouchi Denim's numbers- namely '73', which, when sounded out in Japanese, are a colloquialism of 'na-mi'- the Japanese word for 'wave'! We love being on the same street as these vibrant businesses and walking past them daily on the way to the studio adds a lovely freshness and moment of inspiration to our day! A centuries old design, we were drawn to it for its range of scales, styles and textures that it could be applied to. Yukari begins every design by sketching, hand painting and cutting out various elements that will appear within a design. Oftentimes I would come back from a meeting or errand and find her immersed in a hand painted tryptic of Derby, spanning from an A4 piece of paper to a metre long piece of fabric. This is where it gets really interesting- nearly every ‘tooth’ on Derby has been hand painted by Yukari. It was a real trial and error process- some colours didn’t work well next to the other, some scales were too distracting, some too naîve. Yukari mentioned that she really wanted to do a design that worked well on clothing, too; something that would add not just a pop of colour to a wall, but a design that could easily be co-ordinated into the rest of the home. Having a variety of colours that didn’t clash with the rest of the interior whilst drawing together all the various elements of an individual’s room and their personality was essential- the same prinicpal can be applied with clothing choices. On top of that, it brought me back to my childhood clambering on the back of the little tan and beige shetland ponies and blasting through a gymkhana (think sports day but on horseback), coming out of an egg and spoon race or a mounted apple bobbing contest triumphantly clutching several rosettes, and the joyful feeling of displaying them all over my walls when I got home! These horses are mottled with a myriad of grey and black dapples over pale silver coats, and make me think of the iconic horses I would see being ridden by famous riders whilst flipping through my treasured copies of Horse & Hound and the cut outs of daring photo finishes whenever they were featured on the front pages of my parents’ newspapers.
